Sublimation FAQ
How do I apply Sublimation Designs to my Coasters?
The same heat and press times apply to coasters, as all other Sublimation Transfers (shown below). The main difference is PRESSURE! Be sure to use vry light pressure when applying to Neoprene material to avoid squishing. Normal, heavy pressure is needed for shirts and other substrates.Â
Can I apply these transfers to mugs and metal signs?
Absolutely! Keeping in mind, the mug or sign will need to be pre-coated for sublimation use. There are a a variety of sublimation items and all will work perfectly with our transfers! Also, when shopping in any store, keep an eye out for any items that are a high polyester count or polymer coated - you will be amazed at how many everyday products can be sublimated like some rugs, blankets, pillows, towels, etc.
What shirts can I use?
We recommend the highest polyester content for the most vibrant results. 50/50 cotton/poly blend materials will work but designs may be more "faded" looking. The higher the polyester content, the brighter the image. For the absolute brightest results, consider using 100% polyester garments.Â
Can I use a household iron to apply Sublimation transfers?
Constant, high heat is required for proper application. Due to this, a heat press or oven (for tumblers, mugs) is required for sublimation. A household irons aren't generally capable of covering the entire image with heavy, constant pressure.Â
Why do the colors look dull on the transfer paper?
The transfer paper sheet is only a carrier of the sublimation ink. Once the transfer is properly applied to the substrate, the heat will produce vibrant, final color! Keep in mind, the higher the polyester content, the brighter the results. For shirts, at least 60% polyester is recommended.
How do I wash items made with Sublimation Transfers?
Yes! You can launder clothing with other clothing - no fading, bleeding will occur when using cold or warm water. Machine dry normal, taking care not to over dry. For tumblers or other sublimated, solid items - hand wash is recommended. The design itself will not be removed if placed in a dishwasher; however, most sublimation coating is not inteded for dishwasher use.Â
Can Sublimation Transfers be removed after application?
No. Sublimation ink actually binds with the material its transferred to and "becomes one" with it. It does not lay on top as vinyl or paint would. For this reason, it is very important to inspect each transfer before using. It is possible with any printer to have ink on an edge and any defect cannot be removed later. You can also trim around any design to remove the excess paper.Â
